"Traditional Camp Values in a Modern
Day Camp Environment"
The goal of the
2009 Camp Kadima season was, One Camp Today, One Community
Tomorrow¯. From the very start of camp registration and staff
training, Camp Directors, Jeff Krieger and Sabrina Fish, were
focused on the historical perspective of this camp season. This
would be the first summer that Pinellas County would have one JCC
summer day camp, which would be located at the Pinellas County
Jewish Day School, another first. With the support of the staffs and
Board of Directors of both the Golda Meir Kent Jewish Center and the
JCC of Pinellas County, Camp Kadima was able to offer a very special
environment for a wide variety of children, aging in range from five
to thirteen years of age. With help from the Jewish Federation, as
well as other generous donors, the camp was able to offer
scholarships and free transportation for camp.
Campers clearly benefitted from the commitment and dedication from
an experienced and enthusiastic camp staff that drew from throughout
Pinellas County and boasted nearly a one hundred per cent
retention rate. Added to this mix was a group of ten CITS
(Counselors In Training), high school Bright Future Program and
collegiate volunteers and professional Activity Specialists, who
were all a huge part of the successful program.
Throughout the six week program, campers participated in weekly
field trips, swimming, arts-n-crafts, instructional sports, drama,
science, cooking, computers, Yoga,
Copoeira,
Israeli and Judaic culture, weekly Shabbat and themes, special
guests, pizza and ice cream sundae parties, cookouts, in addition to
the many wonderful traditions and activities that help to define the
unique quality of Camp Kadima.
One of the more special memories of this summer was the twenty four,
Shake It For Shara Dance-A-Thon¯, which raised funds for the Camp
Kadima Shara Himmel Scholarship Fund. Campers, staff, their families
and members of the community participated in this very emotional
event.
Camp Kadima was also happy to again host another member of the
Summer Shlichim Program from Israel and a group of Israeli high
school students via the Partnership 2K Program. Once again the
experience of bringing a touch of Israel to our camp and community
was powerful and exciting.
The value of this camp program in this community was never clearer
when at the very start of the camp season, families from our area
unfortunately learned that their sleep away camp programs had
either been cancelled or delayed due to serious health concerns at
those venues. Many of those disappointed campers quickly registered
at Camp Kadima and were able to enjoy their summer.
Each Friday, the camp vibrated with the new Camp Kadima song,
written by staff members Josh Hytner and Jake Cohen and so
eloquently states, Camp Kadima, it's the place I want to be, Camp
Kadima, it's the place I feel so free, I know it's always going to
be there for me!!
